問題解決能力と網膜症

木曜日の朝、目覚めると右目がおかしくなっていた。

視野全体はなんともないのに、真ん中だけが暗くなっている。目をつぶると、暗く見えた部分に光の粒子が集まる。まるで強い光の残像が残っている感じだ。なんか寝てる間に目にライトでも当たってたのかなーと思って一日を過ごしてみたけど、夕方になっても症状は変わらない。これはおかしいと社内で話をしていたら、後輩が「それ網膜剥離ですよ！」と言うではないか。ひえー！これって失明につながる感じ！

ソッコーで神戸の目医者の友人に電話してみたら網膜剥離ほどのオオゴトではないという返事が来た。なるほど。ちょっと安心。そして次に聞いたのは、「今週末に飲み会があるんだけど、アルコールの摂取で悪化しないかな？」ってこと。「それはあんまり関係ないね」との返事が来たわけで。ああ良かった〜これでガリ☆ナイト（Gallianoを中心とした秘密の飲み会・第五回は3/17に終了）が開催できる。

しかしホントにヤバい病気が発生している可能性だってある。電話じゃわからない。ってことで、金曜日の朝、某テレビ局にしばかれに行く前に眼科に検査に行ってきました。その結果は、やはりオオゴトではないと。ただしちゃんと検査したいし、検査薬を点眼すると半日は近くのモノが見づらくなるので土曜日の朝もう一度いらっしゃい、というコトになった。わたくしはそれを承諾し、最後に一言聞いてみた。何が原因でしょうか？先生はこう答えた。「たぶんストレスでしょう」。

というわけで、ガリ☆ナイトが明けた土曜の朝、もう一度眼科に行って来ました。そして病名がほぼはっきりした。その名は「中心性網膜症」。ネットを調べてみるとこんな解説があった。

中心性網膜症

「中心性網膜症」は、網膜の中心部に障害が起こる病気で、昔から日本人に多く見られるものです。圧倒的に男性に多く、年齢的には30〜40歳代の働き盛りの人、特に事務系の仕事や頭脳労働に携わっている人に多く見られます。
　良性の病気なので、たいていはほっておいても半年くらいで自然に治りますが、再発しやすいのがこの病気の特徴です。はっきりした原因はわかっていませんが、ストレスや疲労が引き金となって起こると考えられています。中心性網膜症を再発している患者さんのほとんどに、非常に強いストレスが見られることが、心療内科の調査でも報告されています。

なるほど。男性、３〜４０代、頭脳労働、加えて最近のわたくしは強いストレスに晒され続けだ。心の表面が風雪に耐えてきた木造建築物の外壁のようにかさかさになっている。また、半年は治らず、再発しやすいとのコト。

よし、わかった。ストレスからは逃げられない。薬も一週間分しか出ていない…。これは明かに「放っておけ」ということを意味する。しかも「働き盛りの男性によく見られる目の病気」でもある。ならば、この病気とつきあうしかない。幸い左目には異常はないし、右目もドーナツ状に暗くボケてゆがみがあるだけで、中心の視力は1.5が確保されている。となると、自分でできるコトは、ストレスに強い自分を作るってことだけだ。医者はそんな言い方はせず、「とにかく静かにしてよく寝てください」としか言わなかったが。

このところ問題解決能力、というコトバが頭の中をぐるぐるしている。以前からずっと思っているコトだが、広告という仕事の本質は問題解決だ。広告はアートだ、クリエイトだ、表現だ、芸術だと短絡的に考える傾向もあるようだが、わたくしは問題解決こそが広告に求められているコトだと考えている。「広告はあるマーケティング的な問題を解決するために表現という道具の力を利用することが多い」というのが正しい理解だと思うし、問題解決ととらえれば広告には「広告しない」という選択肢だってありうるのだ…。だから仕事をしている時に何度も思う。自分は生粋のクリエーターではなく、問題解決士だなぁと。もともと広告屋は問題が発生している所に群がる習性があるものだし。

そこでストレスの話に戻る。ストレスと問題解決能力は直結している。この能力が低いままオトナになれば、ストレスの種だらけの世の中で、自分を防御することができず、壊れていくしかない。。だからこそ、ストレスをはねのけて楽しく人生を過ごすためには、決して他力本願にならず、自らの問題解決能力を高めなくてはならない。今回の目の病気には２種類のメッセージが込められている。ひとつは「お前の問題解決能力はまだまだ低い」ということ、そしてもうひとつは「お前がこれから出会うストレスはさらに強力なモノになるだろう」ということ。どちらにしてもこの能力を高めなくてはならないことはこの網膜が如実に語っている。

と考えると、目を休めている場合じゃない。モトモト原因は目じゃないのだ。というわけで日曜日は読書をして過ごします。ところでドーナツ状にゆがんでる部分を気にせず本を読むと文字ひとつひとつがバラバラになって紙の上で浮遊しているように見える。これは不思議なトリップイメージですよ。そこでひとつ思い出した。ハリーポッターと秘密の部屋にそんな紙の地図があった。あの映像を作った人は毎日がストレス漬けで、しかも中心性網膜症の経験があるんじゃないかな。なんてね。
